Last week along with other key members of the cybersecurity and integrator community, I had the honor of participating in an important hearing at the House of Representatives Homeland Security Subcommittee for Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Protection. I shared my insight, perspective, and recommendations for a more aligned and impactful use of Federal resources. As the threat landscape and attack surface continues to grow, what worked well yesterday, and even today, will certainly not suffice in the new era of converged technologies. The expansion of the attack surface, combined with the rapid evolution in technology, demands a new holistic and forward thinking approach.
Protecting our homeland from cyber criminals and nation state attacks takes a “whole of nation approach” which calls for even more Public Private partnerships. It was encouraging to see our elected officials look beyond today and solicit private sector feedback from innovative industry leaders to help prepare not only for the threats of today, but for those that are bound to come tomorrow.
Armis’ perspective on the need to have full visibility and contextual intelligence of ALL assets in an environment resonated with many members of the committee. Hearing firsthand how our elected officials work to ensure key agencies such as CISA are supported in their mission encourages us all to challenge the status quo. What worked in the past may not work in the future, and our adversaries are moving at the speed of NOW as should we!
We discussed the need to align key funded programs to Executive Orders (EOs) and Binding Operational Directives (BODs). We need to go beyond what has been provided in successful legacy programs and contracts, to account for this expanding attack surface and the exponential growth of converged technologies that include IT/IoT/OT/IoMT.
We also discussed the need to create an environment where innovative companies and solutions can thrive and become part of this important mission. Legacy solutions cannot address the inherent risks that come with not having full visibility and contextual intelligence of all assets. Only then can we identify the dependence and interdependence of each and as such discover any vulnerabilities that may exist within every environment. Collecting and correlating alerts and data works best IF you are including ALL assets.
Innovative cloud offerings provide rapid deployment, scalability and access to a powerful knowledge base, and brings automation that reduces the time for security personnel to assess vulnerabilities and respond. These innovative solutions help to address the large visibility gap that exists in most environments. It also brings efficiency and a level of simplicity to complex cybersecurity frameworks.
